Cinema, Growth, Community!

With this edition’s theme in mind, we have created two sessions dedicated to films made in or about communities.

These film screenings will all take place at the Batalha Cinema Center, with the exception of a conversation-meeting that will take place at the Rectory of the University of Porto and which will feature filmmakers and address issues of cinema and community. They are all designed for audiences aged 8 and over.

The CURTAS COMUNIDADE I +8 session features the short films “Cooked Fellas”, “Choir”, “Moon without a house” and “Percebes”.

In “Cooked Fellas” Don Cannelloni is boiling with rage. Someone has dared to cut La Famiglia’s best (premium) parmigiano cheese with cheap pre-grated cheese! Now it’s up to Tony Riga and Al Capenne to get John Spagotti to confess.

The short film “Choir” tells the story of a small gray town where, in winter, a choir concert is to be held in the theater. The choir’s soloist rushes there. The room gradually fills up – conversations, smiles, laughter, grumbles… The audience only gets quiet when the choir comes on stage. Singing makes people feel so light that it lifts them to unattainable heights. The concert is over and the quiet life of the city continues, but with a new quality.

Moon without a house” tells the story of a filmmaker who, on returning to Azerbaijan, finds the house of her childhood – the gradual disappearance of the once gigantic mountain. In search of something familiar from her past on the almost deserted mountain surrounded by factories and quarries, she meets a grandmother and granddaughter who live together. With their help, she tries to breathe new life into the memories of her childhood.

In “Percebes”, one of the shortlists for the American Oscars, with the sea and the urban Algarve as a backdrop, we follow a complete cycle in the life of a special mollusc called PERCEBES. From its formation to the plate, in this journey we cross different contexts that allow us to better understand this region and those who live in it.

The CURTAS COMUNIDADE II +8 session features the short films “Your Attention Please”, “A Drifting Guitar” and “We Made a Movie”.

In “Your Attention Please” it’s time for the show to begin. Everyone sits down, remains silent and pays attention. Well, almost everyone.

A Drifting Guitar” tells the story of a weasel, whose job is to sell ties, who wanders the countryside. Considered a pest and constantly wandering, she decides to venture into the forest. Her fate is about to change thanks to the unconditional help of a hedgehog.

In “We Made a Movie” Maria Inês experiences the first breezes of love on a summer vacation. Accompanied by her friends, she walks around the neighborhood where she lives, passing the time between beads and shooting a film.
